Is this rude?
« on: August 01, 2015, 10:07:38 PM »
I went to a Korean restaurant earlier, when I opened the door the place was permeated with grilled meat because there wasn't any ventilation.  So I opened the door and put a door stop at the door to get some fresh air in.  The waiters were looking at me mentioning to me to close the door.  Maybe they are used to the smell?  Is it rude of me to leave the door open?

Also, I ordered the grilled meat family meal, so they bought out like 50 different plates of kimichi, dipping sauces, vegetables, meat, etc....  By the end of our meal, we pretty much cleaned up everything, not even a since grain of rice.  Is that rude also?

No I don't think so.

The staff are not making sure the customers feel comfortable by ventilating the place. If the smell was interfering with your comfort and dining experience, then you should be allowed to open the door.

Likewise, if there is a draft, or weird smell coming from outside, then you should be allowed to close the door (even if they insist on leaving it open). But in that scenario I would just ask to change tables.

That said, you have to consider other customers too. So if you want it open, but others want it closed, I think you should just yield. To be honest you wouldn't know if they want it opened or closed. So the best thing to do is to just ride it out and bare with the smell, and then leave a review on Yelp stating how it was like a smelly BBQ sauna in there.

Finishing everything is not rude. Remember, you are in USA, just follow what an American would do.
