Ancestor stories thread

Discuss your ancestor's family dramas amd stories.

I just found out that my paternal great grandfather from north vietnam was a rich man who smoked opium all day, since he had so much money and had nothing to do with it, he spent it all on opium. Even when he moved to the south, to saigon, he continued to smoke opium. When he finally died, there wasn't even enough money for a coffin for him. My paternal grandmother had to look after his corpse. My dad says she used to tell all these funny stories to my dad, but she's dead now.

You guys should talk with your parents and grandparents about family stories from the past, do it now or you'll miss out on your family's history. Cherish them to the fullest.

Oh yeah, he was also a cong san ho chi minh sympathizer. My family had both northern and southern sympathizers. The funniest thing is my maternal grandfather who fought for the ARVN would later sympathize with the csvn lol.

I only lived with my maternal grandmother my entire life.  My three other grandparents either died early or stayed back in VN.

I remember one day when I was about to go out and climb a tree she told me that 'Son, I've been withholding in telling you the family secrets since you are too young, but now you have grown up and gain the rites of passage of the family I have to tell you something."

I forgot the whole details but she said something about leaving the north in 1954 with the whole family entrusted into her since she was the oldest sibling of the family.  My mother has to carry my uncle because he was only 3 years old.  She left all of the family's possessions in the north to her youngest brother.  In the south she is the remaining oldest relative for all the extended family so everyone would revolve around her.

She said something about one of my aunt who was childless from my father's side of the family came by the house to ask to adopt me when I was born.  The aunt was was a widow because my uncle died in battle.  My grandma didn't agree, so she had to go an ask her sister to adopt a son.   Her sister finally did gave her a son.  She stayed faithful to the family even though her husband died.

I used to have a fond memory of my grandfather teaching me how to part my hair. However later accounts from my uncle showed him as a jerk in his younger days. He was a bully to his family and the uncle even encouraged my grandmother to leave  him. The uncle turned out no better as he was a bully to all his family around him.

So many funny and interesting stories. This one here. My great grandfather was catholic then I think when Gia long or more likely his son Minh Mang chased down the Catholics he changed his last name and renounced his faith.
So both of my parents ended up with the same last name even though my moms original last name was different.
