Why small breasts?

Why would there be a mutation for small breasts?  What advantage does it serve?

Physiological or phenotypical changes have been traced to Upper Paleolithic mutations, such as the East Asian variant of the EDAR gene, dated to about 35,000 years ago. Traits affected by the mutation are sweat glands, teeth, hair thickness and breast tissue.[52][8] While Africans and Europeans carry the ancestral version of the gene, most East Asians have the mutated version. By testing the gene on mice, Yana G. Kamberov and Pardis C. Sabeti and their colleagues at the Broad Institute found that the mutated version brings thicker hair shafts, more sweat glands, and less breast tissue. East Asian women are known for having comparatively small breasts and East Asians in general tend to have thick hair. The research team calculated that this gene originated in Southern China, which was warm and humid, meaning having more sweat glands would be advantageous to the hunter-gatherers who lived there.

Small breast size is associated with androgyny, which also has to do with an advance stage of evolution in bodily design. Why big breasts when you can just go to a supermarket for cans of infant formula. Ask any large breasted women, and they would tell you that having them is actually more of a burden rather than an advantage. Jogging/running is tough in addition to frequent backache. Imagine having 10-20 pounds of weight hanging off your chest 24/7, and that is what it would feel like to be "well-endowed" for may ppl. Fun bags for men, but may be not be so fun for women. Aesthetically pleasing? Yes, but an absolute necessity? No

I have read about that too (that Ba Trieu having big tata). Keep in mind that the Vietnamese population in 39 AD would had looked vastly different than we are today. The Trung sisters would probably had physical appearances similar to those figurines in the Dong Son artifacts.

I don't think women would developed small breasts because of physical labor.  Women's job is to mainly rear children.  Having big breasts would mean that they are fertile enough to rear a lot of children.

The gene for small breasts arise about 35,000 years ago in Southern China.  I think it is because the people migrating into East Asia didn't bring with them cattle for milk.  So without milk they become lactose intolerant and afflicted with small breasts.

It takes 9 months to produce a baby no matter how large the breast is so bust size doesn't equate to higher fertility. As I had mentioned before, there is no need for excessively large breast in females because infant formula can be used as substitute for human milk, and since baby formulas are made from cow's milk, ppl in ancient time could had just feed cow (or water buffalo) milk straight to their babies. Evolutionary speaking, I think large breast must had evolved in cold places like Siberia where there are no cattle or reindeers. The reason being that larger breasts tend to have more mammary glands, and thus are able to produce more milk for infants, and in colder climate, babies would require more milk for the growth spurt needed to shield themselves from the cold. This is important as there was no indoor heating in ancient time. As far as appearance goes, while it's true that large breast does look good on women, but it's only meant to be a complementary body part to the face because human attractiveness, the world over, is based on facial features, not height or breast size.

And the most beautiful thing about the human face is the eyes, as they're windows to the soul.

I think large breasts are needed to feed babies.  In the past women would rear children all through their lives.  The average lifespan is maybe 30 years so they would have to feed children constantly.  Babies would feed on breast milk for 4-5 years.  So the breasts are important to store fat especially in cold climates.

Over time breasts would signal reproductive readiness.  Bigger breast women have more estrogen which increases fertility.

Because estrogen plays a crucial role in girls developing their womanly figures, this may suggest that breasts are just a side effect of gaining healthy voluptuous fat overall.

But the study also found that women with large breasts and narrow waists had higher values for both hormones — and the combo of these hormones predicts pregnancy success.

But for East Asian women the small breasts seem to be a result of low fat diet.
