Most of the films made near Hanoi or in the North of Vietnam has a 1980s or 1990s feel in terms of filming and sound technology even though they are made as recently as from 2015 or 2017.   Yet, the quality of the screenplay, filming techniques, mise-en-scène and even acting seem much superior than the run of the mill crap that is produced in the South.  Do you think decades old experience in communist propaganda give film directors in the North an edge?

Is this a Northern Vietnam or Southern Vietnam production?

It is definitely southern with the director and lots of people involved in production being Vietnamese Americans.  Northern Vietnamese cinema is more focused on drama with a clear moral story often with very little fancy tech stuff like they don´t have access to editing software such as apple finalcut pro.  The storyline is usually based in the countryside and tells coming of age issues during war and revolutions.  Lots of elements of Italian neorealism after WW2 and Russian editing techniques with the storylines similar to those drawn out novels depicting Tsarist Russia.
