Vietnamese coins
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:40:05 AM »
Has anyone ever used coins in VN?

There are coins used as currency in VN but I've never seen anyone using it to buy stuff.  Is it because the value is too small to buy anything?  If the value is too small, it would cost the government more to make the coins than the value of the coin itself.

What can 200 dong buy? @Hua

The problem with coins is if the currency devalues it sometimes makes the coins worth less than the face value of the coin.

Let's say if you have 200 dong = 1 US cent, inflation and currency devaluation makes it 0.001 US cent.  The value of the metal of the coin is 1 US cent.  But the face value of the coin is 0.001 US cent.

I've never seen Vietnamese people use coins.
