Do you consider yourself a nerd?
« on: January 12, 2018, 09:13:13 AM »
This one girl called me a nerd the other day.  I was offended, then I thought about it, and I kind of have to agree with her assessment.  I am 95% nerd.  What is your nerd level?

There's an anti-intellectual attitude in America. I think this is counter-productive. Being smart is turned into something undesirable, hence the term nerd.

In East Asia brains are highly valued.

If US wants to prevent itself from sliding into the abyss, they have to change their attitude where IQ is something to be desired instead of ridiculed. From there they can enact policies that promotes braininess. I don't think it will ever happen unfortunately. US is doomed.

American society is very sport focused. Like people who are good at sports get free college sponsors or something like that (what's the actual point). That's not even a thing in UK or most countries for that matter.

But then I can see if college sports brings in a lot of revenue for the institution they can spend it on research etc.

I think being a nerd is fine as long as you don't use your intellect to put people down.

I know someone who is a walking encyclopedia and he would often ask you about obtuse facts that you'd have no clue about and wouldn't give you any hint. Of course you don't know and he would spout out his knowledge to show off. Sometimes even when you have to correct answer this person would ignore it and then tell you you're wrong. Then you make more guesses finally give up then he told you. then you tell him that's my first answer. He then says I didn't hear it or something like that.

it's this kind of people that puts people off. I understand if it's in an academic setting and you get quizzed on things you need to learn but for interesting but otherwise useless facts, it's annoying.

What you just described is more common among the older generation and this would come out as socially uncouth for younger people to do.

yes, it's fun to learn, even useless facts. but you have to make it amicable. If I did that, I would give people hint after hint until they get it. To get people to engage you have to make it challenging but not way over their head so they don't get irritated and give up.

yeah,  I think that kind of  behavior is b/c the person is insecure and he has to show you  he's better than you at something.

I consider myself a person committing to keep learning everyday.  But I could hold a conversation with the meanest thugs from the darkest hood if need be.
