My backyard is about 4000 sq ft. It's pretty unorganized right now.

I need to create a space to hide out. Maybe a little gazego or a tree house or a teahouse.

I don't like maroccan or middle eastern theme. Too complicated and cluttered. I like the more modern minimalist look like some of te oter ones you posted.

I like something exotic. Kind of like having a vacation once you stepped out into your backyard. No use making it look ordinary when you want to travel.

These look kind of cool but way too much.

Gaden, what activities do you plan to do in the patio? Do you cook? Have children play outside?

I think one of my favorite activities to do in the patio would be to read a good book and relax.  So naturalist elements like flowers, trees, and miniature waterfalls all go to contribute to this mood.

It's not really about the activities.  It's about developing your mindset. It's a place where you can stare at from a distance and conjure up images of scenes from a dream.

Activities would be fine like relaxing with a beer.  Trying out your BBQ skills would be fine also.

But the main thing is it keeps you constantly busy. I like to get lazy and leave the place filled up with leaves and debris. Then I would slowly sweep the place clean but with a little trash left behind so that there will be work tomorrow.

I'm gonna build my cousin this. Anyone think it's cool?  I told her it could cost $2000. And she said, 'dat to much!  I want one for $500.'

@gaden how has your remodeling going?

I just recently built a patio in the backyard.  On each side of the patio is a pergola connecting to it, and each pergola has a bougainvillea creeping vine that will in time provide shade and structure to it.  The floors of the pergolas are covered by antique black facerock and they require 51 pieces altogether.  I chose that particular color to accentuate what are to be above them and the surroundings.

I'm not quite done with the patio yet because I still have to install railings or screens, I'm still contemplating on which.  Right now I have two lounging chairs and a center table on the patio, but the furnishing can be changed according to the season/weather.  At some point, loveseats will replace lounging chairs as decoration and purpose.

Hopefully by next year the bougainvilleas will blossom enough to form a density as the below picture.  I will post pics when the project is done.

The bougainvillea is a good choice to accentuate your patio.  It does not require much water and the blooms are very extravagant and showy.

One thing I've learned is that what ever you have in your patio even if it's ugly, if you keep it spotless clean it will look like a $1million.  The reverse is also true, if you have a $1million dollar patio and it's dirty it's pretty much trash.  I think it's in the mindset, whatever your focus will be is displayed in your patio.

I've been busy lately with other stuff so my patio is going slow.  But nevertheless my patios has 10 different amalgamate of structures for different parts of the garden.  I'm currently working on building an outdoor winerack, I'll show it once I have the chance.

But I just finished redecorating my trash can area.

Does my trash can look good?

My cat seems to think 'Yeah, whatever dude..."

Here's the outdoor bar I was working on.  I used whatever wood scraps and concrete blocks I have to create a rustic looking bar.  The countertop is broken granite countertop that my mom's friend threw away.  The shelf is made of weathered landscape timber.  The leaves on the ground are free.

That's a pretty creative way to use concrete blocks to make a wine rack, and what is the structure on the right from the first pic that looks like it's made from bamboo?

Here's my roofed patio with pergola on each side.  I designed everything myself and, as you can see, it's very simple looking but it blends in well with the overall structure of that side of the house.  Initially, I wanted to put railings around the patio.  But now I prefer to leave it as it to create a feel of open space.  What I want to do next is to attach a white metal screen from the back wall of the house to the inner beam of the patio.  That would create just a little bit of separateness to the structure but still retains an open looks. Right now it's summer so loungers is appropriate, but I would want the furnishing to be something cozy when winter arrives.

I also want to add another type of climbing vine to the metal screen, but not sure which type yet.  Maybe bleeding heart?

I think I need to clean up the wine rack area.  But I will leave it for another year.

The structure to the right is a bamboo pergola imported from VN.  I reserve that spot for fine deep conversations and drinking with friends and hooliganism.

Maybe you can plant grapes or Wisteria to your pergola?  That Wisteria will creep wild if you don't maintain it.

I was wanting to build a patio like this for a long time now, but I can't see a way to get the statues.  I even went to a mold casting class but they say I have to get a replica and create a mold before you can cast concrete.

This patio would be like the most awesomeness I could ever dream of if I was ever to achieve.
