I suspect half the Vietnamese here have at least a Masters or above and all have a bachelors except for the guy living in Netherlands.

This thread can only be conceived by a Sinospherean.  It is as predictable as a 7 year old Chinese kid taking piano lesson.

Are there members without a prestigious degree but manage to create an awesome life for oneself?  If so, what were your motivations, philosophies and creations, etc etc?

How about degrees in FAME(finance, accounting, management, economic)?

I got a FAME graduate degree but a STEM undergrad. My life is very ordinary, just a regular salary man.

You may think that way, but I know you're very capable of extraordinary things.  What undergraduate degree did you study for?

School dropouts are the mavericks of society separating themselves from the rest.  Thay are the ones who create change.  People like Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and Mark Zuckerberg all dropped out of college.

Sure, but they all got into good colleges before dropping out.

They are college dropouts because colleges are not good enough for them.

College is for learning the structure of society.  These guys are creating society so it's not for them.

Vietnamese parents are actually very idealistic.  Mine have always advised me to choose a career that "benefits society" and "optimizes the good of mankind".  The moment I realized that many riches came from misanthropy and general disdain for the human race was the moment I became financially independent.   I have clazzmates still mired in the vale of tears for being blind disciples to the advise of their Vietnamese parents.

My degree is for frivolous but rich intelligentia who just want to waste their time disputing with each other.

 -worried

It is the College major with the 3rd highest average IQ.

Yet, there is hardly any economic or civic use for my degree. A useless degree reserved for shallow and pretentious smart people.

 -shrug

I hope I'm not one of those (But chances are, I am). Lol even thieves hate their fellow thieves. Thus, useless and pretentious smart-azzes like me hate my fellow useless and pretentious smart-azzes.

My parents always told me to choose a career I love. They will support my decision as long as its what I choose to do. I have a Chinese friend whom family only gave him two choices, MD or pharmacist. If he can't do either one he would be disown. He went to med school, hated it, dropped out. He completed pharmacy school, but failed a class, and took his pharmacist board test 2-3x before passing. After 4-5 years he is still not working, all he wanted to do was to be an architect.

I am of Chinese heritage and I understood the values of respecting the elderly as taught by Confucianism.  However, I also feel a deep resentment toward it.  My dream is to be a musician but my parents demanded I should be a historian.  I don't want to lie to the world, I just want to create music that would impact people on s very personal level.

When I was in Junior high, a career counselor came and talk to the class.  He asked everyone what they want to be when they grow up because you can be whatever you want to be.  Most kids said doctor, architect, fireman, singer.  I said I want to be a mechanic.  He was like standing there trying to think of something to say.  Then he said his brother was a mechanic, shaking his head.

I actually wanted to be a doctor when I was little.  That changed once I worked for my uncle who was an ENT specialist.  He told me the amount of debt he was in, and he was miserable seeing 40+ patients every day.  Before the ACA act was implemented, you were reimbursed based on the volume of patients you saw each day (and procedures done), so he was milking it.  I saw no compassion, no care for his patients.  They were just a number. He owned a hundred K for school, my cousin who just finished med school, owes a few hundred grands too.  -shock

What you have isn't as important as what you do with what you have..
Steve Jobs went to college for just 1 semester..
Thomas Edison went to public school for a grand total of........12 weeks!

One of the girls I graduated high school with now is the CEO and co-founder of a startup company and is listed as one of the most successful young women in tech on Forbes. She only went to a public university, and only had a 4 years degree, but she is now much wealthier than many of the IVY leagues graduates from our high school class.

That's what happens when someone chooses the path of wonder and opens up their passion into something very..very productive.

The path of itinerary doesn't inspire people as much!

Masters in Engineering. Ph.D. dropout in Engineering. Since then Software Engineer. Now I'm studying part time Computer Science in my 3rd semester.

Comparing with my former class mates, I feel like a loser. One of them went to Harvard, LSE, Science Po and later work for Booz & Company, Goldman Sachs, and European Investment Banking. Others became Ph.D. in Physics, Economics, Sports. Some others are Director of Technologies in some mid/big companies.

Growing up and going to school I always believed I was better than all of them (except for the person who went Harvard, LSE, Science Po, etc. she was like really smart and came from a really good family). But the others were not on par as I was in terms of grades back in high school. Now I'm feeling like left behind...

What is the name of that startup?

Working for a startup is very risky. I'd say the Ivy league graduates will catch up with her in a few years.

Do you know her in person? How was she like back in HS? Was it predictable that she would make it big?

I went to middle school and high school with her. She was quiet, smart, GPA was around 4.0, same as me. She went to a public University, and she was nowhere near valedictorian status, so no it was not predictable. Everyone thought the valedictorian would make it big, but she is currently only a doctor at Stanford.  In my graduating class we also have a Vietnamese mayor. First youngest and first Vietnamese mayor. His GPA was average and he went to a public university too. Nobody thought he would be a mayor.  -

well, looks like you have a change of career. It's only a temporary set back. The main thing is choose wisely your 2nd time around. Do you think software engineering is your forte?

I'm working for about 4 years as a developer. My level is still intermediate.

I like my job. It's fun. I like it. I also think I'm good at it. In my last company I was the expert in the programming language we used. And I was the only one who didn't have a degree in computer science. I had to teach the computer science graduates several stuff - from the basics to the more advanced topics. Even in the current company I have above average knowledge about the language.

About a few weeks ago I switched my job in order to make some more bucks. I will gain nearly 20% increase in salary by switching to the new company (will start there in July 2019 though).

Just checked on linkedIn my old classmates. One of them is "Head of BI Analytics". He was like at least 1 grade worse than me in every classes we went. I just googled the average salary of a "Head of BI Analytics" and it's 20k/y more than what I make. I probably need another 3-4 years before I can catch up with him.

when you look back at the problem you will see, this kind of differences is not important. when we're in the middle of the process, everything seems like a huge deal. It really isn't. You'll end up in the same place in the end.

looks like you made a good choice. follow your passion and the money will follow you.

Maybe you are right. Maybe the problem is that I'm just so surprised that they even make it into some kind of "leadership" position. Back in school, I had doubts about their intelligence. Now they are calling themselves "Director of Techology", "Director of Business Development", "Head of Business Analytics", etc. I am astonished they made it that far....

To make it into a managerial position you have to have leadership and organization abilities, the ability to organize and get things done.  It's not all about grades and technical abilities.

Yes, a good manager is also a good leader. It takes people's skills, effective and good communication, and charisma. Not everyone who is techy smart or educated will succeed as a leader because they don't have these skills.
