If you notice about Vietnamese oldies and it's proliferation, there seems to be a particular song that's being focused upon and is sung by a multiple of people.

First it was Dap Mo Cuoc Tinh, then Tam Su Voi Anh, then Hai Vi Sao Lac, then Duong Tinh Doi Nga....etc....  But there are thousands of songs, so I don't think it will ever end.

But I like the Chinese version somehow.  Maybe it's the exoticism of a different language.

It was said that composers in this era studied Western music and applied to Vietnamese music, as far as incorporating Western instruments, different beats, and explicit emotional sentiments.

But I disagree with the theme of the romantic theme of the song.  Most Vietnamese songs are about lost love and despair.

Many of the songs composed in the 50s have that jazzy quality that’s very western.

Nang chieu is not in that category. I just think it’s a very catchy tune so you don’t even notice the sad sentiment of loss love. Never realized how Asian it sounds until they play the Chinese version.

I actually wrote a long asss post about the jazzy influence in early modern Vietnamese music....backed up by a lot of research not sure if you read it.

Don’t think so. I don’t know how to search for it either.

My ears prefer jazzy rendition of these songs. I know some of them can be sung “bolero” style but I don’t care for it. Interesting how the same song with different instruments can sound so different.

People say Jazzy influence and Rumba, Bolero, Slow, Rock, BeBop, and shwit...

But does anyone know of any foreign songs that sound like Bolero?
