Liliaceae: Welcome to Eats, beats, and soul treats. Celebrating one cultural sf.bay gem at a time.

How this works: Basically I write about the neat things I may encounter in the day.
Nothing is chosen on the basis of favoritism but rather, happenstance.

02.27.2017. Today's love is for: Jewish Culture Week.

Raising a sense of community and belonging for our brothers and sisters of Jewish heritage in America. Remembering their history, understanding upbringing, as well as their contributions to the world.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum of San Francisco is also hosting quite a few informative and intriguing exhibitions covering topics of self-esteem+identity, generational stories, folk dance, and a 90-foot long sculpture menorah that doubles as a depiction of the cosmos. Treat yourself to an inside look through someone else's lens.

02.28.2017. Today's love is for: Guatemalan textiles.

Picked up a couple of these from a local vendor.
They're friendship bracelets, and come in all sizes and colors.
Gorgeous textile and craftsmanship, nonetheless! ♥

Fun fact: each village in Guatemala has their own distinct textile design.
You can identify where a person is from just by looking at their clothing.

(these colors reminded me of watermelon)

Other fact: Most Guatemalans live on less than $1 a day. Reliable micro-financing organizations have helped jump start many independent textile businesses among rural Guatemalan women.

Soul Treats: Thich Nhat Hanh

"For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them".

What does this mean to you?

Detach our judgments of them and accept them for who they are; our experiences of peace and joy depend on it.  This totally reminds of a person I had the pleasure of knowing.  I will forever respect and admire this beautiful person.  *sighs*

Awww *someone* (@Olive Juice)  is having a good time reminiscing  ;)
I'm glad you had the opportunity to have met this person in this lifetime.
Sometimes I believe that certain people come into our lives to simply brighten it.
Who, what, or why? We don't know.
Maybe just a lesson of appreciation (and possibly a changed outlook) like you've had.

This quote made me think about how, sometimes... we're apprehensive about someone or something because of the preconceived notions or stereotypes we may have about them in our head. However, once these false ideas are gone and we give this thing a chance, it may turn into something beautiful. We may come to love, appreciate, and know a side to this thing we may have never gotten a chance to experience, otherwise. Let go of your assumptions, so to speak. I'm going to be completely honest; I've met so many people I now adore and admire this way. It's definitely helped me grow as a person. Life's definitely a lot sweeter.

The quote reminds me of one other quote, "treat them with kindness and you will receive kindness in return."  That's why you should always give people ice scream, maybe you'll get some cash in return.

03.03.2017. Blog: Friday Five.

For the last several years I've made it a traditional to reflect on five things I am grateful for. I chose Friday because it marks the end of the working week. In SF, that week can be a long, arduous one filled with the constant buzz of city life. For an hour or so, I take a moment to take note of what brought me relief between the reprieve.

In no order of importance.
5) All the hugs
4) Checks and balances in society
3) Meaningful discussion that's equally funny
2) Warm weather (= cute dresses, no fuss)
1) Very supportive and loving friends :)

What is your Friday Five?

My favorite five to recharge would be:

5.  beer and coffee
4.  solitude and contemplation
3.  fiddling around and working in slowmotion
2.  daydream
1.  silly chatter

Just use every little chance to daydream and imagine.  I do it everywhere, except I don't know if I was daydreaming or just thinking about something.
