https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/09/opinion/who-were-the-real-nationalists-in-vietnam.html

wow, Bob Dylan was right, the times they are indeed changing.

......

It’s true that Ho fought for independence from France, and then against the Americans for a unified, independent Vietnam. In that limited sense he was true to deep Vietnamese aspirations for cultural autonomy. But that narrow demand for independence did not make him a nationalist, especially in the Vietnamese tradition. Ho wanted independence for a country to be ruled in its culture, society, economy and politics by his party alone.

Except for a relatively small contingent that found French rule acceptable — some Catholics, some French-speaking intellectuals and some well-off families — most every Vietnamese wanted independence without communism. Had the Americans understood this, they might have better understood what motivated South Vietnam, and not moved so quickly to abandon them just as they were coalescing into a unified, motivated political and military force.

VNCH should have conducted guerilla warfare on CSVN right after Saigon fall. It's a shame that VNCH was lead by a weak Nguyễn Văn Thiệu.... We should have had a ''Assad'' as president.

VNCH is a failed state from the beginning. Politically as well as military. Leaders are soft, weak, born from nepotistic families , pampered throughout their life. They were only put into power through connections, and conformed to the general will of their colonial bosses. They have no true will or desire of their own, their only hope for success was U.S hands out and military assistants. Instead of relying on their own wit and courage. Their soldiers were mostly mercenaries, opportunist, and war profiteers. And when they go against their will of their colonial bosses, the CIA send in guns and have their leader vanquished.

With what courage will soldiers endure excessive labors in which they are not accustomed to? With what fervor will they go on marches under leaders who were never on the frontline? With what political motivation when their leader being gunned down with impunity?

People like you tell me that VNCH could've won. But you never tell me how they could've handle overwork, how they withstand the harshness of the season, the inclemency of the weather. How would they endure low on ration, hunger and thirst. You would tell me, they're brave. I know, they're so brave, that they would've triumphed against Hannibal of Cannae. It was the peasants who you look down, the workers whose life were spent mostly out door, endure heat, wind, rain, and the inclement seasons.  It was they who were accustomed to  labor, hunger. thirst,  handled over work, surveyed and lived on the land. It was they who vanquished and exile your ancestors.

Strength and vigor, perhaps is more necessarily than valor. What difference does it make to the state if its troops die from fever, cold, malaria, or by the enemy bullet?  Scientific advantages alone do not make for success in war. What difference does it makes when you have all these highly advance instruments of war, napalm, bombs, and everything else, when your troops does not have the moral qualities?

Let's rewind History back to 1945.FDR died in 1945 and replaced by Truman who cared more about  European advanced economies under soviet threat than Third world  Asia since Japan was defeated. Marshall funding was directed to UK, FRANCE,ITALY,West Germany  to contain USSR. In Asia_Pacific mostly Japan...

Vietnam was left alone . Ho Chi Minh's declaration of Independance never reach The White House. To gear up his army,HCM had to follow then Mao's precepts.
With US funding ,Vietnam would have steered towards more and less to democracy like Singapore.
Do not forget Ho Chi Minh's people worked hands in hands with the OSS (former name of CIA) to save Allied pilots.
For the first lines of HCM 's Declaration of Independence:

All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."

Sound familiar to You ?

HCM seeking help from the US!

The VNCH was formed out of nowhere.  You'd expect it to be a lawless helter skelter land grab power grab dog eat man kind of world.  Vietnamese never experienced any form of democracy so to expect it to be more perfect than the Philippines is just outlandish.  Diem or whoever is in power should rule like a dictator with martial law rather than treat it like a democracy.  That is the only way to force the people to follow and create unity.

The first signs of a strong economy in Vietnam would be mass emigration of Vietnamese people to USA just like Taiwan in the 1980s, S. Korea in the 1990s and China in the 2000s.  This means people want to get out or die trying.
