Small bus - Xe Lam
« on: May 16, 2018, 10:05:20 AM »
What happened to these small buses?  I don't see it anymore on the streets.  Wouldn't these small busses be more efficient than the big buses because it could maximize load capacity and can travel numerous routes?

They were outlawed in Vietnam. I remember reading an article that they were thinking about bringing them back (although this was a couple of years ago, so I guess it never materialized), but I don't think they'll ever become as popular as they are in neighbouring countries. Vietnamese people already got a taste of the freedom of having your own transportation with all the bikes. Hopefully they won't be as resistant to using urban rail though.

I could never get a hold of true traffic accident statistics in Vietnam but I bet it is one of the highest in the world.  I rather be free in a shitty 4 wheel Huyndai Sonata cruising at 30kmh in Vietnam´s traffic than a two wheel moped with zero protection on impact.  Also, traffic crash is not the main thing to worry about.  Those moped drivers will come back and beat you dead if you´re still conscious.  There is no "are you ok?" but rather "duma may, my brand new moped is scratched!", then take off the helmet to use as a weapon.
