300,000 VND ($13) for one bowl lmao...

This is a result of inflation because the commies keep depreciate the dong to encourage export.

Considering that a normal street food banh canh is around $1.  This banh canh is $13 which seems to me is just a fad and it will wear out quick.  People just want to try it first just to say that they've tried it. Most people who tries it are first timers.  There are no second timers for this dish.  I wouldn't think it is any much better than a $1 banh canh.

Just like gold ice cream, it doesn't taste much better, but it looks expensive.

Inflation really doesn't affect foreign currency because the Dong is always pegged against the Dollar in the Forex Exchange. The value for money is tied to GDP. Money is worthed more if it can buy more, and that has to do with a country's productivity. You can't really buy anything from VN with the dollars because it would have to be converted to Vietnamese currency first, and if the people in VN are being productive, then the Dong would have gone much further, thus strengthening its value in the international market. Economists can keep inflation in check taking measures to contract the money supply, ie. buying up foreign bonds or even having the FED raising the interest rate. When the economy is healthy, they do the opposite, and use Quantitative Easing to stimulate growth.
