Correct me if I'm wrong, but the two main ethnic groups who loves anise are the greeks and the chinese.  :)

Had to ask wikipedia: "Star anise"
Illicium verum is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to northeast Vietnam and southwest China.
Anise  (Pimpinella anisum), also called aniseed, is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia.
I don't know,I have both. When I suffer desires of sugars I just bite aniseed and mostly use star anise to my cocoa.

I mix cocoa powder with some instant coffee, vanilla extract and some sugar and milk, then leave the whole concoction in the fridge until it gets chilled up.  :)
