Not just this article but numerous other research articles have suggested that the inspiration for the Chinese dragon comes from Chinese people first hand witness of the Komodo dragon.  And here I thought it was a product of Chinese imagination due to their you know high IQ.  So disappointed. 

Since the historical range of the Komodo dragon is no where near China, is this a case of cultural appropriation or what?  It´s like how Chinese appropriated the Panda when it was well known that Pandas lived in Vietnam for centuries before the Chinese killed them off for erectile enhancement.

Well Chinese dragons have a spiny back which komodos don’t have
Lizards have spiny backs

Chinese dragon has scales...typical of lizard types, big or small.
