Phillip II was a German not a Spanish as he came from the German Hapsburg dynasty which ruled Spain and much of Europe at that time.  The Spanish destroyed more native Filipino culture than any other conquering armies.  This is the reason that Malaysians, while fully acculturated to Islamic culture, display more knowledge about their own history than the average Filipino who can´t even speak their own language.  As soon as Vietnam becomes fully independent, a lot of Vietnamese go back to learn about their history and culture.  The Philippines has been independent from the USA for a long time but you can clearly see a deep cultural deterioration in their youth.  How can Filipinos even hope to defeat the Japanese in robotic competitions when they can´t even speak their own language while living in the Philippines?

The cultural deterioration in the Philippines happens over many generations.  When these college age kids become parents, they will teach the same mongrel way of communicating to their kids.  I used to be amazed at how good many Filipinos speak English but now that I know the reason, and the concomitant detriment to their mother tongue, it really changed my perception of their culture.

Filipinos English proficiency is a result of bastardization of their mother tongues, which are so weak as to make English a nearly dominant language.  In this regard, the Filipinos are not multilingual in the way the Swiss are, but in the way the Indians are.  When your original culture is so weak, it makes a foreign culture appealing as a preferred culture.
