I need to catch some jellyfish
« on: April 26, 2019, 08:12:15 AM »
There are a lot of jellyfish in the ocean where I live.  I wonder if it's safe to to catch it and eat it.  They sell them at the Asian supermarket for quite expensive.  I'm not sure why because jellyfish are easy to catch and there are an abundance of them.

Box jellyfish in the Gulf Coast carry toxin on their tentacles..the edible type seems to be safer to handle.

I found a video of this guy cooking what looks like a box jellyfish..notice how he carefully uses a fork to avoid touching its tentacles! Box jellyfish carry toxin on their bodies as well, and not just the tentacles so they definitely can't be eaten raw.

I did some reading on jellyfish, and apparently Asians eat a whole lot of them..about 25 tons a year as the matter of fact!!

2 types of jellyfish are currently commercially harvested. The ones shown in the OP videos and familiar to many Vietnamese are Rhopilema hispidum. They are translucent, and reach adult size of about 3 feet in diameter!

In the water off China, Japan, and Korea, there's a different variety of edible jellyfish called Rhopilema esculentum.

This is what they look like:

Rhopilema esculentum or flame jellyfish are reddish in color as you can see in the sashimi.

Jellyfish are 98% water, but in upon drying they are 85% protein in the form of collagen (plus 5% fat).

Collagen keeps you looking young..

Box jellyfish make good survival foods but are generally unsafe to eat IMO..sea turtles snack on them but humans aren't sea turtles!

Very boxy looking! If you eat one raw, vietrealm members will have to communicate with you via a Ouija board.
