This is what you get for having no allies, and your only ally Russia is now in the pockets of the Chinese hahahahha. Dumb commies.

At some point, the Chinese military will need to test its new capabilities – and Vietnam is likely the preferred adversary.

When China says it will attack Taiwan, it means China will never attack Taiwan. If the Chinese really want to take back Taiwan, why would they warn Taiwan about their upcoming plan to attack Taiwan? It doesn't make sense from a military strategy perspective but its much more about nationalism propaganda.

Vietnam has always been the much preferred choice for China to test their military capability. We fought mostly on our home soil against any Chinese army so China never loses anything much if it decides to wage a conflict against Vietnam. If China tries to invade Taiwan, China may end up with an embarrassing defeat with most of its navy sunk down in Taiwan straits but with a border conflict with Vietnam, China loses nothing on its side of the border.

How do you counter a bully from attacking?  Kick him in the balls (nuclear weapons) or go to his mother and slap her (diplomacy).

Nuclear weapon = North Korea. So no, we are not allowed to join the big boys league.
Diplomacy? What political leverage does Vietnam have over China?

Vietnam is obviously China´s top choice for a beat down but Vietnam´s commie diplomacy is also not to be underestimated.  China will lose much more in the long run but once again Vietnamese people will perish.

Vietnam has all the factories that are relocating from China.  China will then fears Vietnam's rise.  Sooner or later the trade imbalance with China will decrease or reverse.  What Vietnam can do is to build a border wall to prevent Chinese from coming in and steal jobs.

Vietnam presently does not even have the rail infrastructures to move products from Hanoi to Saigon efficiently.  It´s still done mainly by ships.  Ships cost less money but it makes it harder for other land-based factories outside of Hanoi and Saigon to integrate production.  The type of work moving to Vietnam from China includes many labor intensive, low tech production which the Chinese government wants to shed off. Vietnam is so behind even dirt poor China it is laughable.  The Vietnamese government has enough money to finance so many infrastructural projects while labor is still cheap but they rather use tax money to build ever more golf courses and F1 tracks.  I can´t help but think that much of the nation´s resources go into some guy´s side hobby.  It´s like Cuong Dola and his cousins run Vietnam´s domestic policies.
