Vietnamese comic/manga and culture politics
« on: June 18, 2019, 03:31:55 PM »
Currently, I am addicted to those anime series. I see that Japanese culture is completely different from Chinese only a fraction of Chinese culture remains such as Kanji based on Chinese pictogram.

I suggest Vietnamese should throw away Chinese culture as much as it can if it wishes to export its culture to be popular in the West. We did throw away Chinese character scripts to adopt Latin which helped boost literacy. Now just throw the last remnant of Confucius which placed high values on the society structure and strictly sex.

There are reasons why Anime popular worldwide while the Wuxie mostly popular in China and a few Asian countries. Same as music, Chinese music reached goldern age in 80 was at peak popular in some Asian countries Kpop Korea reached high worldwide. Even Vietpop is now popular than that cantonese music.

Traditionally, As “pictorial stories”, comics have not been highly regarded by society due to the long-standing influence of Chinese Confucianism, where a “story (truyen)” needs to have educational and moral values set in its content.

I've moved on from watching anime & reading comics. When you watch & read many of them, you will recognise they are all just the same type of  entertainment products for the masses. Its not the kind of philosophical sophisticated cultural values that the Japanese are exporting, they are just producing stuffs for the average consumers and making profits from it. When top CEOs of Japanese firms see people like AnNamMit praises how great Japanese anime/manga is, they would think of him as another typical Japanese entertainment consumer.

Entertainment is an culture element, does not represent everything. However it is as important as other elements such as cuisine, literature...etc. it just serves different audiences.

Entertainment is the most effective way to get people interested in a culture, I learnt a lot of Japanese culture from watching Anime. Unlike those Chinese Wuxia emphasizes on Confucius values, Anime is more open to the world with no boundary on how individuals values should be kept. Yet it is very entertain and does not attach to nationalism, there are few anime promote nationalism but most do not. Chinese movies are boring, most of movies either promote Chinese nationalism or place China at center of the universes. That is why Chinese Wuxia gets no where popular as Anime except countries such as Vietnam where heavy influenced Chinese culture so the Wuxia movies are so normal to them
