Vietnam has skyscrapers therefore industrialized so goes the thinking.  Vietnam is basically the Chinese model minus 10 years.  Vietnam´s commie dictatorship will be replaced soon.  Democracy is like nike airmax it will be accessible to nearly all citizens on earth in the future.

Having and being able to do something are two completely different things. What constitutes an industrialized nation to you?

Measuring a country's success through industrialization is an outdated model.  However, Vietnam needs to pass this phase first.  Vietnam feels much poorer compared to even Thailand and Malaysia and it will take 50 years at least to catch up to the level of industrialization of Korea and Japan today.  And Japanese GDP per capita is even lower than even the poorest American state, Mississippi.

In short, Vietnam will remain poor for a long time.  Maybe after the baby boomers (those born from 1975-2000) have died off, Vietnam has a chance at current Mexican standard of living and that won't be until at least 2060.  For Vietnam to reach the standard of living of say Germany it won't be until 2100 and beyond.  Robotics have replaced jobs of the lowly educated citizens of industrialized countries already so it is just a matter of time robots replace manufacturing jobs in the third world.  The only way this trend stops is innovation in fuel technology making transport costs marginal.

It has been predicted that innovative countries will continue to grow in wealth while the poors of India and China will continue to see a trapped existence.  China is pouring money in building a consumer economy but this will not succeed as Asians in general still see money as a finite accumulable resource.  They convert their money into statist gold instead of re-investing in newer wealth-creating enterprises.  Wealth is structural and cultural.  The Asian model like that of Korea and Japan lasts for about 50 years and runs out of steam.

Industrialization would mean the majority of the inhabitants working in some sort of industries.  I guess it would be urbanization minus the service sector?  Vietnam would be an in between with agriculture plus service and manufacturing and processing.  It does not mean modern buildings vs slums.

If you are talking about sustaining wealth then innovation and value is the key.

only 30% of Vietnam is even urbanized.  The average Vietnamese participate in the economy like this.

Vietnam economy will flourish in the next 10 years if she can produce massive amount of quality fruits.  2030 is when the whole world embraces veganism.  Veganism is a smart and correct choice, raw veganism is even better but fruitarianism would trump every diets.

VN would speed up the industrialization process if it offers free education until college.  Most students quit school after secondary education because of school expenses.

There is also a culture in VN that education is expensive and is being used by the upper class as a luxury.  The rich goes to school and shuns the lower class with lower education.  If the government provide free education this culture will be wiped out.
