There're going to shut down Hanoi Train street
« on: October 10, 2019, 08:12:24 AM »
It used to be a slum but became a tourist attraction.  But the crowds have grown to unmanageable numbers.  Someone's going to get killed.

It’s a good venue for tourists, but playing with traffic is not wise. The overriding principle is always public safety.

I don't think it's dangerous as they make it out seem to be.  No one has been killed or injured yet, unless they want to be injured.  Just draw a line for the people to stand behind when the train comes.  Or have the Cafes on the rooftops.

It's more dangerous in the street traffic with the cars and scooters.

Even most modern subway systems let you stand as close to the train as you want to be.

The average subway platform is huge and wide open!

Look how small this street is..

People getting hit by trains are very real occurrences. Statistic is once every 2 hours in the US.

In a confined space, it's very hard to get out of the way in time when there's a crowd of people blocking you.

Quote
Quach Tuan Anh, manager of Hanoi Locomotive Factory, said a train departing from Hanoi railway station to the Train Street section on Phung Hung Street had to stop for more than a minute last Sunday, waiting for many tourists to move out of the tracks.

Last weekend, the number of tourists flocking to cafés along the train street was much higher than usual. This also forced the train to stop for a while, as even at a slow speed, many tourists couldn’t move out in time.

"In the Phung Hung area, the maximum train speed is 25 km per hour, but the train drivers usually go at less than 20 km, sounding the horn repeatedly to warn visitors," Anh said, stressing that it was the first time a train has had to come to a complete stop, waiting for tourists to clear the tracks.

Dude was lucky.

It's the same way for tourist boats heading out to sea; always heed weather warning!

Quote
The Phoenix was carrying 105 passengers, the majority Chinese tourists, when it hit trouble, sparking a rescue attempt that took place in the dark.

Some 48 people -- passengers and crew -- were rescued and one body found Thursday before the operation was suspended overnight.

Thai junta number two Prawit Wongsuwon ordered an investigation into why "the boat went to sea" despite a weather warning of strong wind.

The Phoenix was among several boats that appeared to have ignored a severe weather warning in place since Wednesday to take tourists on day-trips to the islands that dot the seas off Phuket.

Several other vessels hit trouble late Thursday. Initial reports from officials said all of the passengers on those boats were rescued.

The fact is that it looks dangerous but no safety incidents.  The only problem is controlling the crowd.  You could have a pre-run 5 minutes ahead with a car before the train comes to clear the tracks.  There are only 2 train runs each day.  The rest of the day you can setup tables in the middle of the train tracks.

I guess you could reduce the crowd by charging them $50 to go in for a train pass adrenaline rush.

Maybe hire some fast runners that can run over 20 km an hour, have them run 10 or 20 seconds ahead of the train to clear off any obstacles (humans, pets, tables...). The businesses there should pay them to do so. Tourists like to see different ways of life. Modern life or your daily life becomes boring after awhile. That's why they want to do something different.

There's a 10 minutes warning bell, and the locals have adapted to it.

Trains are not always on schedule so you have to be attentive.

Anyway, the place has already been closed. Fun while it lasted..

In Thailand:

_____________________________

Let the local people track the trains' locations via GPS.

Display big screens telling people how far away the trains are.

Taiwan also have trains going through neighborhoods.  Maybe just put up rails like in Taiwan.

Guard rail around train crossings is a great idea as it helps to minimize human errors!

Hanoi metro trains are really nice inside. The first class section even comes with sleeping cabins and food services!

I think they are shutting it down because the officials need a cut from the businesses.  The businesses have opened from the people's own home without any regulations.
