They are all over China and Southeast Asia. I don´t think they are known for martial spirit but still they maintained their culture and language.  If there was another war with the Chinese, I think I will recommend Viet comrades to simply learn Hmong.  Look at them: so poor but always out having a picnic and smiling.  No need to learn submarine technology to fight anyone.

give meabrake the Hmong are not even one group, there are different names to classify the very different Hmong regional tribes.  Hmong shua is a form of sinicized Hmong. Some are not even sinicized but Mongolized like when Mongol remnants camped out with the minorities during the rise of Ming dynasty

Tibetians tried the Hmong survival technique and it did not work out great for them.  I think the Hmongs are truly the only Asian ethnic group(s) who survived invaders via passive acceptance.

Well, they did have armies at times.  The ones in Laos had the army under General Vang Pao, which then devolved into a small resistance army called "Chao Fa" after the Americans left Laos.  They formed an army and rose in rebellion against the French in the early 1900's led by Vue Pa Chay ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vue_Pa_Chay%27s_revolt ).  They most likely immigrated into SEAsia after the Miao Rebellions of the 1800's in China ( http://www.davidleffman.com/zhang-xiumei-and-the-miao-war/ ).

I believe the Hmong have rebelled into armed conflict against Chinese when they were forced to assimilate.  But the Hmong are tribal and lack central administration to carryout military strategy to be successful.  They need to join forces with VN or Tibet or Mongols to have a chance.

But their resistance and resilience to Chinese intervention is admirable.
