I don't know this piece but so many of them has this jazzy style, slow from the 50's. I feel like I was listening to perry cuomo or something.

That´s because most of the people producing this music grew up in the 1940s and 1950s and they were influenced by the jazz their parents listened to as teenagers in the 1920s and 1930s. FIY, Lam Phuong was born in 1937 so his early musical influence  probably had elemental hints of Jazz.  Although Jazz came from America, Paris was the most receptive city in Europe for this American sound because Paris already had a huge American expatriate population then (Hemingway, F.Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Gerald Murphy, etc.).  The hip French kids listened to this stuff, and since colonial Vietnamese looked up to the French, they imported this musical influence into Vietnam without knowing much about the source.

South Vietnam actually had many rock n roll bands but after 1975 an entire generation of musicians who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s left the country.  In Vietnam, as soon as I hear guitars played in the streets, I just know I am in the South.  It is the legacy of a once open and globalized Vietnamese youth blinded and deafened by war who now subsist as ghosts of the past.   But even beggars in the South seemed freer than beggars from the North since they turned to modern music as a way to cope with adversity.  In Hanoi, a generation was cut off from the world, with nothing but propaganda for consumption. If you hear any instruments, they are old school Chinesey flutes and đàn bầu.  What a tragedy it was to survive the 20th century and lived as strangers to the sound of guitar.

I think heavymetalists would jam out to this.
