Price this vase
« on: May 21, 2020, 11:05:59 AM »
I bought this vase in VN a long time ago.  It is not of high quality.  Made of mud or clay I think.

How much do you think I can sell this for on eBay?  I would think if it's a one of a kind, maybe $10.

Fair price for this ceramic vase would be around $35-$45 (plus shipping) seeing that disposable 3 gallon buckets are being sold for $10.

What if I put some big flowers in it to make it more classy and presentable?

The vase costs me about $1000 to fly over to Vietnam and bring it back.

How about a refurbished shattered pitcher from VN?

There's an art called kintsugi in which broken ceramics are binded together with gold and become even more expensive afterward.

Quote
Kintsugi (or kintsukuroi) is a Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum. The philosophy behind the technique is to recognize the history of the object and to visibly incorporate the repair into the new piece instead of disguising it.

A typical ceramic pot could sell for about $50, but art is something else. It's what people are willing to pay. Any flower vase once owned by Bảo Đại, for example, could easily fetch at least $2000.

I have these bowls that are broken and I glued them back.  Do you think I could pass it off as a Tran dynasty relic dug up from an archaeological site?  It could be worth millions.

The cobalt blue coloring wasn't done in VN until the Le era (1428–1788). The previous Ly-Tran potteries used only brown iron oxide as pigments, similar to potteries of Song China.

Quote
Ly (1009–1225)–Tran (1225–1400) glazed stoneware (Hong River region). The technique of incised designs reserved in a brown iron-wash is learnt from Chinese Cizhou wares of the Song period. This is a particularly robust interpretation of this subject matter, typical of the newly independent Vietnamese state under the Ly (1009–1225) and its successor, the Tran (1225–1400).

Later Le era, 15th century.

Most antique dealers and auction houses run a battery of test on their items to ensure authenticity, commonly done is the XRF spectroscopy emission procedure. It's a non-destructive process and the finding can be compared to index value of known samples from the same historical time period. Really fascinating on how they do it.
