Is preference for light skin OK in VN?
« on: February 19, 2021, 06:08:45 PM »
The guy mentions a few times about the kid being dark.  Some commenters say to stop preferring light skin over dark skin.  Vietnamese probably don't care.  But it is a beauty standard for Vietnamese to have light skin.

Talkin with he mouth full of food! Uncouth!

I don’t think they care too much at that age.  I see my cousins daughter, he cousins and friends  are mostly med to dark skin. When they’re older than they’ll care.

Troy seems like a very dubious person. On one hand, he's a good samaritan helping the poor etc. On the other hand, he can say some controversial things. This time with this skin color issue. I'm not a big fan of Kyle, but I like him more than the Troy. He just seems more genuine.

I think people in the West are paranoid about skin color because it conjures up discrimination when ever skin color is brought up, so it has a negative overtone.  If a guy is dark because he went sunbathing, you can't call him dark?

In VN skin color is more of beauty trait much like lipstick or hairstyle.  There is no discrimination undertone.  Vietnamese are also blunt in commenting as they feel the other person doesn't take offense over the comment.

I've been following Troy the last few days.  Some of his videos about helping people is pretty engrossing, especially the ones from the north,  As you can see most people in the north declined the monetary donations even when they are in need.  I'm not sure why.

Bác chúng em dáng cao cao, người thanh thanh,

he's not tall at all. Maybe in younger day a couple inches taller? in the picture shorter than Kim Il song.

The grandson looks more like the grandfather than the father. Looks like genes skipped a generation.
