A VN guy I knew looked up his ancestors and traced his roots to Germany. His last name is Bach.

Is this the same as 23andme DNA testing?

How do they trace your family ancestry?  By hospital birth records? It would be tough to gather any VN historical data or if VN have any records.  Plus by the fact that Vietnamese often change their names.

Anyone know why Vietnamese change their name?  I didn't even know my father's real name until I visited my father's home town and the local people call him by his real name.  I said 'who?'

That goes with my uncle and aunts too.  I always call them by their usual name until someone calls them differently. I said "who?'   I don't know if they are trying to hide their identity from gang members or something.

change their name? How so?

In my family everyone has a nickname including aunts and uncles. I was confused as a little kid b/c of it. I also though my mom and dad were sister and brother b/c she called him "anh" and referred to herself as "em".

Well.  Growing up we're always known our aunts, uncles by their usual name or the name that we've grown to know them by.  But apparently old acquaintances or family members in another region know them by a different name.

Like I know my Aunts and uncles

Cậu Nghị
dì Dương
Chú Cần
bố Hoan

other people would call them as

Khôi
Cúc
Ban
Tập

I say 'what?'

Funny because I went to see my uncle in the hospital and I was looking for chú Cần, but the hospital does not have any records of anyone by that name.  Then I called my cousin to see if he's dead already and they took him out.  My cousin said his real name is Ban.

I don't think they are nicknames.  Usually nicknames are weird like thằng cùi, con khò, etc...

LOL, I know a VNmese guy, his name is "bach" and they traced his ancestor to Germany. But that was many years ago. If they're still behind on that then no point wasting money.
